What Does a Fully Devoted Life Look Like?

What Does a Fully Devoted Life Look Like?

At DVTD, our mission is to help people live a life that’s fully devoted.

It’s a big mission. And as much as we love how your shopping with DVTD can help shape the world, and how our Affiliates can share with others by starting their own purpose-driven business, and all of our purchases give back to multiple causes, our mission goes way beyond all of that. At the core of our mission is the idea that we were all created with a purpose, and if we could all live out that purpose to its fullest, then the world becomes the best version of itself.

Like I said, it’s a big mission. You may even think it’s a bit “pie in the sky.” I get that. But like anything else, the real reward is typically found in the journey, in the striving after a goal, not always the goal itself.

So, what are you fully devoted to?

That’s a question I ask people a lot (myself included). I think we often struggle with answering it because we’re not exactly sure what a fully devoted life looks like. Wouldn’t it be great if we could see it in action? If we had a role model?

I have some good news: we do have a role model. As a matter of fact, that’s the whole reason we celebrate Easter.

Jesus Lived a Life That Was Fully Devoted

Jesus is the ultimate example of what a fully devoted life looks like. He was all human, sent with a very clear purpose. He was surrounded by distractions and naysayers and obstacles and disappointments, but none of that weakened his devotion to his own personal mission on this earth.

He also was the one human who could have probably made a case for not being submissive to His creator, and yet scripture shows us He was actually the most submissive human who has ever lived. In Luke 22:42, we see Jesus, fully human, asking His Creator to “remove this cup from me.” In other words, “I really don’t want to do this; isn’t there another way?” But then, he quickly resets and submits His will to the will of His Creator: “Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”

Jesus lived a life that was fully devoted.

I know what you’re thinking: “If living a life that’s fully devoted means dying the most excruciating death ever known, count me out!” I tend to have the same thought. Of course, history has shown us that’s not God’s purpose for everyone. As a matter of fact, it’s not His purpose for most of us.

But He does want us to be more devoted to His will for our lives than we are to our own will. To the point that, if His purpose for our life was that extreme, we would trust His way so much more than we even trust our own.

The Bible puts it this way in a few places:

  • Jeremiah 29:11
“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'”

  • Matthew 16:24
“Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?'”

  • Isaiah 55:8-9
“‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways,’ says the Lord. ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.'”

  • Proverbs 14:12
“There is a way that seems right to a man,  but its end is the way of death.”

  • Psalm 37:4
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.”

  • Matthew 6:33
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

  • Colossians 3:23
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

There’s a lot to unpack in and around those verses. I won’t even attempt to do a thorough, exegetical analysis of it all. But when it comes to thinking about how we live a fully devoted life,

I’ll summarize it this way:

  • We have a Creator (and He has a great plan for us).
  • Therefore, we should trust His plan for us even more than we trust our own plan (He did create us, after all).
  • There’s a good chance His plan doesn’t always make sense to us.
  • That doesn’t mean we don’t get things we want or desire; it just means we follow God full out, knowing that what He has for us is better than we can even imagine.
  • As we go through our journey, we give it our full heart.

I think we all like the idea that we were created with a purpose. It sounds like a fun adventure, figuring out and living out your purpose.

But the bigger implication is this: if we were created with a purpose, then there must be a Creator. And knowing and following Him is the real adventure. We may all have distinct purposes that we’re living out, but we also all share this one purpose as creations of the same Creator: to know, follow and glorify Him.

Jesus understood this, and lived it out like no one ever has. He is our role model here. And Easter is ultimately a celebration of His devotion, and what His Creator was able to do through it. Because He lived His purpose, the one He was created for, the entire world has been impacted, and all of eternity.

Have a Fully Devoted Easter

Whether your own beliefs about Easter and Jesus and creation align with mine or not, I hope and pray that you have a fully devoted Easter this year, however you want to define that. If you’re spending time with family and friends, or working and serving others, or attending a worship service, or just relaxing, “whatever you do, do it with all your heart, as unto the Lord and not to man.”

Happy Easter, and thanks for being part of the DVTD family!
